Take Your Mother to Bridge Night

Today I took my mother to see the sights of Wichita - it was a beautiful warm sunny day (70F - almost 20C for my Canadian friends). Miguel's daughter made us tacos for lunch - and they were truly delicious. Flour tortillas, stuffed with meat and potatoes - all fried up and then stuffed with lettuce, tomato and cheese.......with great fresh salsa and guacamole. Delicious I tell you.......

In the evening I took my mother to play duplicate bridge. My mother has played bridge for almost 30 years - she plays rubber bridge (or kitchen bridge).......tonight was her first duplicate bridge experience. It was the second time we have ever played together (as I'm just a beginner) but we were contenders and had fun playing. She enjoyed meeting my fellow players and everyone was very kind and welcoming. Yay for bridge........

And an update on the "Search for Hot Cross Buns": no HCBuns found today

Sounds like a wonderful day. This is from Canada where there are roll-overs on the highways because the ramps are icy this morning. The snow is still about 2 feet deep, wish that I was joking. Have not been in my backyard for nearly 3 months and I will not be going there this weekend; snow is still up to my hips. Maybe in another week.
The lunch must have been delicious. My only comfort is that I will be able to get hot cross buns today and I am off to the best bagel place in Toronto, Harbord Bakery which has been in business since the 1920's.
Enjoy the visit with your mother.

I have a question for you... Can I learn to play bridge well enough so that I can play with my mother? I am not good at card games and I don't really like them. The idea of doing this with my mother, who I have never spent much time with, does sound appealing..I think that is is time to do this before the opportunity is gone... What do you think? Linda Oh, by the way, Nora, I must say that if you do a taste test between Harbord bakery and Bagel world or even Montreal bagels, I don't see Harbord coming out on top!! Bagel world is opening a new location right at Spadina and Bloor... I know it is just a matter of taste but does anyone else have a preference?

Linda - I just started learning bridge a year ago - my mother has played for almost 30 years..... The bridge experience will be a good common bond for us - something we can play together and then something we can discuss outside of games .... Do it.......(then we can go to a tournament someday and I can actually meet you in person!)

Okay, I will give them all a try. That is my project for next week. I try to set myself an extra project each week. Something that can not always be done quickly. Testing bagels seems like a worthy challenge. I will get some of each and put them to the test. Where do I get Montreal bagels? No time to go to Montreal right now.
I don't play card games either but I have a vision of us sitting at tables playing bridge, reflecting on blog entries and eating hot cross buns, bagels, after a meal with pickled beets and my favourite purple cabbage.

O.K. Nora -- where are you buying your hot cross buns? I have been in a hot cross bun search and have not turned up said treats, but did buy some excellent chocolate croissants and blueberry scones this morning for Good Friday breakfast. Are you getting them at Harbord bakery? As for bagels, I love Gryfe's (Bathurst, north of Lawrence) As for Montreal style bagels, I like them too and buy them at St. Urbain's. I don't know if I could play bridge with my mother -- you (Krista) are braver than me and you (Linda) are way more hopeful than me. But I"m with Nora -- I can see us sitting around bridge tables, talking and eating and maybe throwing a card or two around.
Have a great Purim and Easter Weekend everybody!!
