Take me out to the ball game........

For the first time in a long time we ventured away from Wichita - we packed our bags, filled up the car with Boost nutritional drinks (the beverage, er food for those who have had throat cancer treatments for the last 8 months) and the laptop. We were going on a road trip.....

We are so good at organizing trips....... well, actually my friend Beth in St. Louis organized the trip. She got tickets for Miguel to see the Chicago Cubs play the Cardinals - there was no way he would not be going to see the Cubs. His chemo treatments were supposed to be over, but because he was sick he had to miss treatments.....but there was no way he would not be going to see the Cubs. His susceptibility to infections and germs is so high.....but there was no way he would not be going to see the Cubs. So when he was able to have chemo on Thursday, he willed the drip to go faster and practically tore the needle out so he could get on the road to see his Cubs....

Did I mention we are good at organizing trips? We planned it perfectly to leave right from the chemo clinic to drive into tornadoes in Kansas City. We had planned to stay in Kansas City for the night so the trip wouldn't be so long (and so that I could watch Lost, 30 Rock and Office) - but tornado and storm warnings in the midwest mean that all television shows are pre-empted for storm coverage. The next day we made it to St. Louis and we went to two games (the Cubs won one, lost one)..... Busch Stadium is right downtown and it faces the Arch - a very impressive site.

The rivalry between the Cubs and Cardinals is friendly and good natured - and it is amazing how many Cubs fans were in town for the game. (for my Canadian friends - you can tell team affiliations because everyone going to the game is either dressed as a Cub or as a Cardinal)

There are a few things I still don't understand about baseball. I watch curiously as people watching the game, get up from their seats all through the game (disturbing everyone else and blocking the action) - there is so much activity during the game. Add to the activity the peanut, beer, cotton candy vendors walk up and down the stairs (further blocking the action). I also have two comments about the U.S. National Anthem. At both games, the Anthem was performed by primary school choirs. The children could not reach the high notes (lower the key for the National Anthem and it will sound better and be easier to sing). My pet rant is always that no spectator actually sings the National Anthem - they listen to the performer. Everyone should join in and sing - forget getting performers who want to put their special touch on the Anthem. When it is played, everyone should sing the Anthem. But that is just me.........

I didn't blog or correspond with anyone while I was away for the four nights - didn't even open the computer - didn't even get tempted to stay in touch. Imagine that...... But I did miss you all..............
