Mamma Mia - Split Decision.........

So the Tuesday Movie Group met for a summer confection of Mamma Mia. We usually don't schedule movies for the summer, but we just had to go and see Meryl and Pierce and hear the ABBA music. I had seen the musical many years ago and loved it - loved the songs, choreography, staging and the whole audacity of making a story using the ABBA songs.

The movie is fun - the Aegean setting is gorgeous, the colours are bright and vivid and the Greek Chorus of characters is hilarious. It is a lively, funny and touching movie that examines motherhood, marriage, old friendships and unrequited love. I loved the choreography and craved more boys in flippers and men in masks. Meryl Streep can sing (as opposed to Pierce Brosnan) but I didn't really want to see either of them sing or even dance (or writhe around on the roof either). Almost everyone shed a tear or two - at least most of us admitted it........The majority of the Tuesday Movie Group loved the movie - there were a few dissenters (me included).......

If you go, be sure to stay for the closing credits sequence.........

Methinks you were in a little bit of a bad mood. I enjoyed every second of the movie. Shed many tears. Loved Meryl Streep's rendition of Winner Takes It All and also the song she sings about her daughter growing up, as she is getting her ready for her wedding. (totally sobbed during that one) Laughed very hard, enjoyed the scenery and the colours and felt that it was a great celebration of age, motherhood and friendship. Didn't care that Pierce Brosnan couldn't sing and loved the dramatic arc that the movie could illuminate, which wasn't as apparent onstage. Can't wait to buy the soundtrack so that I can relive it everytime I drive in the van.

Moi - in a bad mood? Perhaps you are right in your "methinking"..... I suspect that the reason I enjoyed the daughter and her boyfriend singing is that I didn't know who they were.....it was just a little strange to see Meryl sing and Pierce try and sing....... I liked the stage play better.......but it could just be a bad mood.......
