Lost, Top Chef and other Television.......

Wednesday rolls around and I can't wait for the latest Lost episode. The weaving of the tale of a mysterious island has kept my attention since the first episode. That the writers play tricks with my emotions, twist my perceptions and force me into the strange world of time travel, philosophy and religion, only serves to keep me coming back for more. Last night's episode featuring John Locke (aka Jeremy Bentham) left me wondering (once again) who really are the bad guys and who really are the good guys. What if neither side is wholly good or evil? Too many questions yet to be answered, but I thought last night's episode was great.

Not so great? The winner of Top Chef. Carla, an unlikely finalist, clearly blew her chance to win by relying on the suggestions of her sous-chef. Had she pulled off one of her "from the heart" meals, I think she might have won it all. Stefan, an arrogant and cocky man-to-despise, was the front-runner all along. The judges had to try very hard not to let him win. And that left Hosea - clearly a poor choice for winner. Uninspired and pedestrian.

Now - for my mother, Wednesday night viewing is different. My 88 year old mother loves American Idol. She also needs to have the volume to everything cranked up to maximum so she can hear. Her apartment neighbours complain that they can hear her television - that her television is too loud in THEIR apartments. So, a week or so ago, we got her a new television (one that actually worked) and some headphones that would allow her to adjust the volume (and not annoy her neighbours). Good solution, right? Nope - the headphones aren't comfortable on her ears, she doesn't really know how to work the converter (she didn't have one with her old television) and when, god forbid something happened and she changed the settings so the headphones wouldn't work on the American Idol channel, an emergency call was made for us to come and get "the sound back" so she could continue to watch American Idol. So off we went - and we came back with the new headphones. There is simply no way she can cope with them. To her neighbours, I'm sorry - we tried. Hope you enjoy American Idol......

A few food thoughts after watching Top Chef.

1. One of Hosea's meals featured what I consider to be the "most stupid food preparation gimmick ever" - foam - pate de foie gras foam to be exact. Everyone, stop with the foam already.

2. Carla's loss can be attributable to using the sous-vide method for cooking her main course. I have only recently heard of this method - cooking in airtight plastic bags that are placed in hot water that is kept below the boiling point. You don't believe me, do you? But I kid you not. I have never tried sous-vide - but it sounds as stupid to me as foam.....

To wrap up - Good - Lost; Evil - foam; Good - Wednesday Night Television (except American Idol emergency calls); Evil - foam (and maybe sous-vide)

On the mother-related front, to all of you out there, never, never, never let your 88 year old mother get talked into switching to a Bell Expressvue satellite television system!!! You will be inundated (plagued)by emergency television calls because that converter is impossible to work with arthritic fingers, poor eyesight and little technical ability or confidence. And it is impossible to trouble-shoot over the telephone so you will be there way more often than you already are.

I figured the headphones were a no go after last night - no way she could figure out how to get them to work. I'm now thinking I will get her to use close-captioning - maybe that will keep her neighbours from complaining. BTW - there is NO way my mother would pay ANYTHING for cable or satellite. She has only 4 stations (mostly Canadian) because there is no way she will pay for more.

Close-captioning for American Idol. Now that would be interesting KLK
